World Book Day

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading. It is the biggest celebration of its kind designated by United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. First initiated in 1996, the World Book Day normally involves children of all ages coming together to appreciate reading. Also known as World Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO and the international organisations that represent the three major sectors of the book industry - publishers, booksellers and libraries, select a city as the World Book Capital to maintain, through the city’s own initiatives, the impetus of the Day’s celebration until April 23 the following year. The World Book Capital for 2017 was Conakry in the Republic of Guinea while Athens, Greece was the World Book Capital for 2018. Sharjah, UAE is the World Book Capital for 2019. April 23 was chosen as the World Book Day because it is a symbolic date in world literature. Several prominent authors - William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died on this day. The UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris in 1995 decided on this date to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors, to encourage everyone to access books. Send World Book Day FaveKads to inculcate reading habit among your friends and their children.
