International Day for Monuments and Sites

On April 18, 1982, on the occasion of a symposium organised by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Tunisia and a corresponding meeting of the Bureau in Hammamet, Tunisia, it was suggested that a day be established to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world. The International Day for Monuments and Sites was generated from this idea and was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference, which passed a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983, recommending that the Member States examine the possibility of declaring April 18 as the International Monuments and Sites Day.
